My Current Favorite Band: The Midnight

So a few months back, I bought a ticket to see my current favorite band, The Midnight, in Washington DC. The plan was to go to work, leave a tad bit early to let Miko out and such, then head to DC that evening. The following day I pictured myself being too tired so I would take a day off with PTO. Unfortunately, none of that happened. I ended up cancelling my PTO and gave my ticket away to someone on Reddit. I chose to do this because my job has gotten so crazy within the past few weeks and it's all hands on deck at the moment, it felt irresponsible on my part to just leave early and take that day off. 

Now I'm not going to let this upset me. I take pride in the fact that I'm able to be productive during this time, and it genuinely felt good seeing someone be so ecstatic to get a free ticket to see The Midnight. I made someone's week and the fact that it didn't go to waste made it sting way less. This will not be the only chance I have to see this band. I'll absolutely be able to make this up somehow in the future at a better time. 

Now fuck all that, I wanna gush about The Midnight. 

This is a synthwave band composed of Tyler Lyle and Tim McEwen. They were inspired by the soundtrack of the movie Drive (after my own heart haha) and contributed to the growing retro synthwave scene around the mid/late 2010s. If you ask me, they completely nail the 80s synth sound more than anyone else. 

A lot of "80s synthwave" music nowadays is usually a regular rock song with a synth overtop. I believe The Midnight manages to employ a perfect balance of instrumentation and chord progression that heavily resembles the style of music in the 80s. One of my favorite songs by them is Change Your Heart Or Die. This could be a Journey song. It could turn on when the arcade opens up in Tron. It's perfect. Another that I like is Heroes. This has a similar sound to The Police and a bit of Duran Duran. 

So yeah, while I'm bummed I couldn't go see them last night, I'm okay with how things are turning out instead. I'm getting a lot of work done and I made someone's night happy.

Pokemon bums me out

So off the bat I don't wanna be overtly negative but I'm going to be with how I'm feeling about what used to be one of my favorite franchises. Clickbait ass title aside, I actually do think Wind/Waves look pretty good. They actually are increasing the production of the new games which has been sorely needed. I won't go on my standard pokemon game rant as I've done so with probably everyone who would be reading this blog. The new one actually looks like a lived in world which is what I wanted. Unfortunately, I feel like I don't want Pokemon anymore.  Last week I brought my DS with me to Atlanta and restarted Pokemon Platinum. I replay that game every few years. It's impossible for me to look at that game without rose-tinted glasses, as I'm sure that's the case for everyone with their first pokemon game. Resident Evil Requiem

Update: Blogger had a weird glitch and had to republish. As of 3/3/2026:  Last night I finished off RE9. I really really liked this one. When I think back on all the modern RE games (since 7), I feel like while they've all been consistently good, some just hit harder than others. I like 7 and 8 but looking back, they just don't stand out in my mind compared to all of the remakes, even 3 (granted I have personal reasons for really enjoying that one but still). RE9 definitely left an impression.  Mechanically, this is half a sequel to RE4R and half a sequel to RE7/8. At first I thought swapping between Grace and Leon would be rather jarring, going from fast action man to slow paced horror but no. The strong juxtaposition between the two works in the game's favor, both from a gameplay standpoint and a thematic direction.
